I am reading this as saying: You are happy with losing the ammeter as long as you get the tach feature. So, you intend to discard the printed circuit that came with the cluster pictured above, buy a new one applicable to your 76 with tach option and install it in the early model cluster. When that is all done, you are going to pull the ammeter from the cluster and replace it with your current voltmeter. Sounds like a plan. And, it doesn’t look like the circuit board change is even necessary. See the attached dwgs. There are a few differences, but they can be ignored for the most part. Leaving the board in place and plugging in your 76 harness:

I would suggest you try to find the manufacturer of your tachometer on the web and check out their support site and email them if needed for your particuliar vehicle. For instance below is a link to Autometer’s Tech Tip web site however unless you own an Autometer Tach this may be useless to you. Th…ere are so many different ignition systems today that it would be difficult to explain each.

So its best to get the info from the pro’s.

Edit Article How to Install a Car Volt Amp Gauge. In this Article: Ammeter Installation Volt Gauge Installation Community Q&A Volt and Amp gauges monitor your vehicle’s electrical system. The ammeter measures the amount of current to the battery whereas the volt gauge .

The original gauge package that I selected for my roadster in the s consisted of manual gauges for the oil pressure, water temperature, and speedometer readings because I was using a magneto in my Buick Nailhead-powered roadster. I also had an ammeter with a amp maximum range that is no longer adequate for my new amp alternator. These factors and the change to a new Crane conversion-equipped, Russell Martin rebuilt Buick distributor called for the update to some new gauges.

I ran mechanical gauges in my small-block Chevy-powered Deuce Vicky for eight years without any problems. My highboy has nothing but throttle linkage poking through the firewall so I wanted to avoid routing anything else through it. Retaining the classic looks of the VDO Cockpit series gauges that the car was designed to have in the vintage gauge panel was important. Fortunately I was able to replace the mechanical gauges with a full set of modern VDO Cockpit series electrical gauges. One-quarter inch spade-connectors supplied with the instrument kit wiring harness made installation simple and easily removable should the need arise.

The biggest benefit derived from the change has to be the fully programmable VDO speedometer.

Contact Us How to check Fuel Pressure Checking fuel pressure is very vital in diagnosing an engine performance issue. Depending on the application, it will take any where from a few moments to a few minutes to hook up a fuel pressure gauge. Most systems you can screw right into the fuel rail at the pressure test port while others you will have to tap into the line by removing the fuel line from the rail or even the line from the filter and installing a fuel pressure gauge in between the two in order to get an accurate reading.

Click here to speak with a live mechanic if you need help. Checking Fuel Pressure Some fuel systems are only at 30 to 40 psi while others range in the 50 to 60 psi range or more. Once you know what your fuel pressure is at, you are going to want to go and look up the correct specifications for your vehicle to see if your fuel pressure falls within the factory specs.

You can go to alldataDIY or another source to look up your specifications for your vehicle. If the pressure is low you will need to be sure that the filter and the high pressure line is not pinched or plugged up in any way. In addition, be sure that the pump has full battery voltage and a good ground before you replace it. Types of fuel systems.

If you go that way you will also have to get your work inspected and passed before it will get hooked up. It might not be worth your time. If you live in the country, you can do it yourself. On top of that, why would you install a amp box if you are upgrading anyway? In addition to the box and breakers, you will need to purchase a new meter base.

The Balance Coil type of gauge was used on Buses up until the ’73 models (thru VIN ). Late ’73 and later Buses used the thermal type of gauge with a bayonet mount sender (single float).

Your Ford’s electrical system differs from your home system in how the electricity is managed. Household electricity is volts of buzzing alternating current AC. Automotive electricity is volts of direct current DC. In household wiring, we have two wires for function and one for safety. One is hot black , one is neutral white , and one is ground green.

Grounding a household appliance keeps alternating current from passing through humans to ground electrocution. The ground wire carries short-circuited electricity to ground through the green wire, which keeps humans safe from electrocution. With automobiles, we have a single hot wire positive that provides power to the lamp or accessory. The second wire neutral is the car’s body, also known as the “ground,” which carries electricity back to the battery to complete the circuit.

This is what we mean by “negative ground.

Click to jump to this section. Karmann Ghias and Buses had them even before this. The gauge used on the Beetle from ’68 onward is a thermally-actuated design. It is not a new concept; Ford used gauges similar to this as early as the ‘s and it probably goes back even further. Here’s the basic concept: The rheostat varies the current flowing into the fuel gauge on the dash. Inside the gauge, a tiny heating element responds to the rheostat current.

When fuel level is high, current is at a maximum and the heater gets hottest.

If provoked, the monster will jump out and bite them. The fuel gauge is not one to be afraid of and most problems can be solved with the proper ammunition! We have received many calls on fuel gauge issues we thought it would be a good idea to provide our readers with the basic knowledge of the fuel level circuit and testing procedures. See Photo A — touch the black lead to the sender housing and the red lead to the sender post and move the float up and down to see what the ohms are on empty and full.

All About Car Restoration How to Use and Interpret a Vacuum Gauge Few tools or test devices are more useful and versatile than a vacuum gauge, yet very few hobbyists own one. A vacuum gauge can tell as much about the internal and external workings of an engine as the combination of a voltmeter, compression gauge, stethoscope and timing light.

An engine’s vacuum readings can tell an awful lot about its running parameters, provided you know how to read the gauge in the first place. Unfortunately, most vacuum gauge manufacturers don’t provide easy-to-follow instructions and diagrams to help users interpret gauge readings, rendering the gauges themselves virtually useless. We’re here to change all that, so follow along with us on a tour of vacuum gauge readings and we’ll show you all the neat things you can do with one.

That pressure corresponds to the weight of air holding a column of mercury Vacuum is by definition: In engines, of course, the air is being sucked in by the vacuum created by the movement of the pistons. The Gauge Face All vacuum gauge faces are graduated in inches of mercury, although some have additional scales in millimeters of mercury. Note also that most vacuum gauges are equipped with an additional scale that measures fuel pump pressure.

This allows the user to connect the hose directly to the fuel line entering the carburetor to measure the fuel pump’s pressure. Since many fuel system problems can be traced to the pumps themselves, such a tool can save a lot of troubleshooting time.

Kelvin 4-wire Resistance Measurement Chapter 8 – DC Metering Circuits Suppose we wished to measure the resistance of some component located a significant distance away from our ohmmeter. Such a scenario would be problematic, because an ohmmeter measures all resistance in the circuit loop, which includes the resistance of the wires Rwire connecting the ohmmeter to the component being measured Rsubject: An ingenious method of measuring the subject resistance in a situation like this involves the use of both an ammeter and a voltmeter.

Thus, we should be able to determine the resistance of the subject component if we measure the current going through it and the voltage dropped across it: Current is the same at all points in the circuit, because it is a series loop. Our goal, though, was to measure this subject resistance from a distance, so our voltmeter must be located somewhere near the ammeter, connected across the subject resistance by another pair of wires containing resistance: At first it appears that we have lost any advantage of measuring resistance this way, because the voltmeter now has to measure voltage through a long pair of resistive wires, introducing stray resistance back into the measuring circuit again.

Thus, those long lengths of wire connecting the voltmeter across the subject resistance will drop insignificant amounts of voltage, resulting in a voltmeter indication that is very nearly the same as if it were connected directly across the subject resistance: Any voltage dropped across the main current-carrying wires will not be measured by the voltmeter, and so do not factor into the resistance calculation at all. This method of measurement which avoids errors caused by wire resistance is called the Kelvin, or 4-wire method.

Special connecting clips called Kelvin clips are made to facilitate this kind of connection across a subject resistance:

They also sell the shunts which can measure one current and carry another. For example, the one I am using develops a full 50mv at amps, but is rated for amps. This allows you to “scale” in a way to see smaller changes in current.

My instrument gages fuel, oil, water were not working when the car is running they had worked with the key on and the engine not started. I just installed a wiring harness from american autowire and a one-wire alternator. After scratching my head for a litte bit, I unplugged the ammeter, started the car and the gages worked fine! Because of the new harness and the one-wire alternator, I had connected the ammeter yellow wire to the alternator post and the red wire to the battery stud on the starter relay.

I ran the two wires through the firewall and plugged them into the ammeter. Is there a better way to hook up the ammeter? What would cause the rest of my gages to not work if the ammeter is plugged in this way? The gauges, except the AMP meter, get their power from the accessory circuit via a Constant Voltage Regulator on the back of the cluster.

Check to see if it is getting power. If it is, and the gauges don’t work, it’s shot. If I understand how you have wired your AMP meter, to hooked it up as though it was a real ammeter.

You can see the letters stamped in the insulation material around the posts. Either way, there is only one circuit loop inside the temperature gauge. The resistance test outlined below is still valid.

My power windows don’t move at all! Check the fuse on the power window relay as well as the relay itself for the windows. Also clean the contacts on the switches as noted above – the current for the passenger window passes through the driver’s side switch, so check them all. Can I switch out my 85mph speedometer with a faster one? It is for the same reason that the national speed limit was set at 55mph. However, this regulatory goal may or may not have something to do with the US government giving large amounts of money to the Chrysler Corporation to produce K-cars.
